AI tools don't know your domain

Why domain knowledge matters more, not less, now that AI writes a lot of the code.

Claude Code has changed how I work. Boilerplate, refactoring, finding my way around an unfamiliar codebase, drafting tests: a lot of that is faster now.

But these tools don't know your domain. They don't know why a business rule exists, which edge case matters to your users, or what "correct" means in your context. And they don't know when they're wrong. They're just as confident either way.

So domain knowledge matters more now, not less. The people who get the most out of AI are the ones who know the domain well enough to spot when it's confidently wrong, and to steer it when it's guessing.

Treat it as a tool. Anyone who treats it as a colleague who knows the business is in for a surprise, usually in production.
